Coast Guard Cutters

The U.S. Coast Guard has commissioned dozens of cutters to patrol the waters around America’s shores. These ships have been employed in a wide variety of tasks by the Coast Guard, including assisting mariners, performing narcotics seizures and rescuing immigrants. Many of these vessels also saw active service during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other U.S. military conflicts.

During World War II, many Coast Guard cutters were assigned to the U.S. Navy and saw action in the North Atlantic. Among the most noteworthy of these ships were the famed Treasury class high endurance cutters (also known as Secretary class cutters), all but one of which served from their launches in 1936-1937 until the 1980s.
