Naval cruisers are one of the largest warships used by modern navies. Cruisers are the largest ships used by the U.S. Navy after aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships.
The modern-day cruiser ship was developed by the British and Italian navies in the decades following World War I. Cruiser ships were designed to fulfill a variety of naval missions, ranging from smaller, lightly-armored scout cruisers to heavily-armored battle cruisers, which rivaled the size and firepower of battleships.
During World War II, cruiser ships saw extensive action during U.S. Navy battles in the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns. Following this conflict, developments in carrier warfare rendered many larger naval vessels, such as battleships, obsolete. Some cruiser ships were converted to guided missile cruisers after the war that could be used to protect carriers from aerial attack, or for shore bombardment during the Korean War or Vietnam War.
Although the use of naval cruisers declined in the second half of the 20th century, cruisers armed with anti-aircraft guided missiles continue to be used by the U.S. Navy, which is one of only three navies around that world that still has cruiser ships on active duty.
