Avondale Shipyard in Westwego, Louisiana
The Avondale Shipyard in Westwego, Louisiana (located about 20 miles from New Orleans) first opened in 1938 and remained in operation until 2014.
During its first few years in operation, the shipyard functioned mainly as a repair and shipbuilding facility for barges and other craft that sailed on the Mississippi River.
At the start of World War II, the Avondale Shipyard received contracts from the U.S. Maritime Commission to build Navy tugboats. Later in the war, this led to additional military contracts to build destroyers and destroyer escort ships at the naval shipyard.
After World War II, Avondale continued building ships for the U.S. Navy, including landing platform docks and amphibious assault ships. The shipyard also began building drilling barges and offshore oil rigs, as well as fishing boats and other commercial vessels.
Although the Avondale Shipyard was closed in 2014, the site was purchased by the Virgina terminal operating company T. Parker Host in 2018, who transformed the former shipyard into a manufacturing and shipping hub that was rechristened the Avondale Global Gateway.
Asbestos Exposure at Avondale’s Westwego Shipyard
During its more than seven decades in operation, tens of thousands of workers at the Avondale Shipyards were exposed to asbestos from the materials that were used in the construction of ships built at the facility.
U.S. Navy ships and commercial vessels that were built at the Avondale Shipyard contained asbestos materials inside ship walls and around boilers, incinerators, pipes, and other areas. Asbestos could also be found in materials such as lagging or the protective clothing worn by shipyard workers.
Although the use of asbestos materials at the Avondale Shipyard ended in the 1980s, workers who were involved in the repair or construction of ships before this time may still be at risk of developing malignant mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases that are linked to asbestos exposure.
