Asbestos Exposure at Borden Chemical Plant in Geismar

The Borden Chemical Plant in Geismar, Louisiana began operations in 1961. After Borden Chemical went into bankruptcy in the early 2000s, the company’s plant near Baton Rouge was closed in 2001.

Initially, Borden’s Geismar plant produced acetylene, methanol, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Over the following decades, several additional plants were added to the facility, including ammonia and urea plants in the mid-sixties, formaldehyde plants in the seventies and eighties, and a PVC resin plant that began operations in 1983.

Workers at Borden’s chemical plant in Geismar were at risk of asbestos exposure for decades because of the high levels of asbestos materials and equipment found at this chemical plant. Many chemical plant workers were issued “protective” clothes that were laced with asbestos fibers. Asbestos was used in the construction of this facility, as well as in boilers, pipes, and other equipment used by chemical workers.

Asbestos fibers at the Borden Chemical Plant could be disturbed during installation, repair, maintenance, or during the day-to-day operations of the plant. When these asbestos fibers were inhaled or otherwise ingested by workers, they faced significant risks of being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure.
