Asbestos Exposure at Chevron’s Belle Chasse Chemical Plant

Chevron Oronite’s chemical plant in Belle Chasse, Louisiana – known as the Oak Point Plant – is located about 20 miles south of New Orleans in Plaquemine Parish.

The Oak Point Plant first opened during the 1940s to produce fuel additives during World War II. Over the following decades, Chevron expanded the chemical plant, allowing it to eventually become the second largest lubricant oil and gasoline additives plant in the world.

Chevron’s Oak Point plant currently employs several hundred workers and contractors. The facility boasts a manufacturing area, blending facilities, power generating units, and utilities.

Because of asbestos materials that were used during the construction of Chevron’s Belle Chasse chemical plant, current and former workers at this site may be at risk of exposure. Some workers at the Oak Point Plant may have also been issued protective equipment laced with asbestos fibers, which may have further increased their risk of exposure.

Workers who inhale or otherwise ingest asbestos materials located at the Oak Point Plant may be at risk of developing serious illnesses linked to asbestos exposure, including malignant mesothelioma cancer and asbestos lung cancer.
