Asbestos at Cities Services Lake Charles Refinery

The Cities Services oil refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana began operations in 1944 to produce airplane fuel for bombers during World War II.

After Cities Services was acquired by the Occidental Petroleum Company in 1982, the Lake Charles plant continued operations under the CITGO name.

Located near Shreveport, this CITGO refinery is the fifth-largest refinery in the United States and the largest of the company’s three oil refineries. The plant is capable of refining more than 460,000 barrels of crude oil per day, which is used to manufacture a number of petrochemical products, including gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, benzene, and other compounds.

Large amounts of asbestos were used as insulation for the pipes that connect the refinery and storage tanks at CITGO’s Lake Charles plant. Asbestos materials were also found in the boilers, pumps, tanks, and other components at the former Cities Services oil refinery.

Because of the widespread presence of asbestos materials in the construction of CITGO/Cities Services Lake Charles oil refinery, workers who were employed at this facility may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other asbestos-related diseases. This risk of illnesses caused by asbestos exposure is still present even decades after workers were first exposed during their time working at the Lake Charles petrochemical plant.
