Asbestos Exposure at Conoco’s Lake Charles Oil Refinery
The Continental Oil Company (Conoco) oil refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana began operations in 1941. Initially, the plant was used to refine crude oil, as well as producing other petrochemical products such as propane and butane.
In 1951, Conoco decided to expand and modernize its Lake Charles refinery, which enable the facility to refine more than four-times as much crude oil per day, as well as to produce specialized petrochemical products, such as benzene.
After Conoco merged with the Phillips Petroleum Company, the Lake Charles oil refinery continued operations under the name ConocoPhillips.
Because of the large amounts of asbestos that were used in the construction of Conoco’s Lake Charles refinery, workers who were employed at this plant may be at risk of developing mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases linked to asbestos, even decades after they were exposed.
Asbestos was found at the Lake Charles Conoco refinery in pipes that connected the refinery area to storage tanks at the facility. Asbestos materials were also present in boilers, pumps, tanks, and other equipment located at this plant, putting workers at an increased risk of life-threatening asbestos cancers.
