Asbestos Exposure at Dow’s St. Charles Operations

Dow Chemical’s St. Charles Operations, located near Hahnville and Taft, Louisiana, first began operations in 1966. The facility is now operated by Union Carbide, a subsidiary of Dow.

Today, the Dow-Union Carbide chemical plant in Hahnville manufactures a variety of petrochemical consumer and household products, including adhesives, detergent, paint, plastics, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and supplements for animal feed.

Lawsuits against Dow filed by former workers at the company’s facilities allege that asbestos materials found at these sites caused thousands of workers to be exposed. As a result, Dow factory employees face an increased risk of developing diseases linked to asbestos exposure, including mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, and other health conditions.

These lawsuits filed against Dow Chemical also have alleged that the company continued to use asbestos-containing materials at its plants decades after these cancer-causing substances were abandoned due to their health risks. The lawsuits allege that the company continued to use asbestos products because of the fact that they are cheaper than alternative materials.
