Asbestos Exposure at Dupont’s LaPlace Chemical Plant
Dupont’s Pontchartrain Works facility in LaPlace, Louisiana – located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans – first began operations in the 1960s.
Dupont originally used the site to produce products such as neoprene and Kevlar. In 2015, Dupont agreed to sell the neoprene manufacturing unit at the plant to Denki Kagaku Kogyo and Mitsui & Co. The company continued to manufacture Kevlar at the factory after the sale was complete.
In 2021, an internal Dupont memo revealed that the company decided to sell the neoprene unit at the Pontchartrain Works over concerns that it might be subject to major Environmental Protection Agency regulation due to the release of a carcinogenic chemical, chloroprene, from the site. Local residents who allege that they were exposed to chloroprene from Dupont’s LaPlace plant have filed lawsuits against the company.
Workers who were employed at the Dupont Pontchartrain Works may also be at risk of developing cancer as a result of asbestos exposure at this facility. Because of asbestos materials that may have been present at this site, workers in Dupont’s LaPlace, Louisiana plant could face an increased risk of developing diseases linked to asbestos exposure, including mesothelioma cancer and asbestos lung cancer.
