Asbestos Exposure at ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge Refinery and Chemical Plants
The ExxonMobil refinery and chemical plants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is one of the largest oil refineries in the world.
This facility was first opened by Standard Oil in 1909. Control of the plant eventually passed to Exxon (later ExxonMobil) after the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) was renamed in 1973. At various points, the refinery and chemical plants also operated under the names Humble Oil and Refining Company, Enjay Chemical, and Esso Chemical.
Over the years, ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge oil refinery was used to produce a wide variety of fuel products, including aviation fuel, diesel fuel, gasoline, jet fuel, lubricating oils, and waxes. The chemical plants located near the same site can produce billions of tons of petrochemical products annually, including adhesives and paint containing methyl ethyl ketone, and products such as diapers or tape that are made with isoprene.
Due to the age of ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge oil refinery and chemical plants, workers employed at these facilities may face a high risk of asbestos-related diseases due to the widespread presence of asbestos materials at this site.
Much of the equipment that was used to refine crude oil at this Exxon refinery contained asbestos insulation. Asbestos was also used as a retardant for chemical reactions. Many of the countertops, benches, and protective clothing worn by workers also contained asbestos.
Although these materials were intended to protect workers, exposure to asbestos at the ExxonMobil plant increased the chance that workers at this facility could later develop diseases linked to asbestos exposure, including mesothelioma cancer and asbestos lung cancer.
