Asbestos Exposure at Firestone’s Sulphur Polymers Plant
The Firestone Polymers plant, located near Lake Charles in Sulphur, Louisiana, began operations in 1943 as a production facility during World War II. The plant is now owned by Bridgestone Americas, which acquired Firestone in 1988.
Firestone’s Lake Charles facility is the primary supplier of rubber for all Bridgestone and Firestone entities. In addition to producing large quantities of synthetic rubber each year, the Firestone plant also manufactures thermoplastic elastomers (also known as thermoplastic rubbers), which are used in the production of various automotive components, medical products, and other commercial and consumer products.
Workers at Firestone’s Lake Charles plant may have been exposed to asbestos materials that were used in the construction of these facilities, or that was used during the manufacturing of products that were produced at the site.
Lawsuits filed against the Johns Manville Corporation have shown that Firestone purchased asbestos from the company that was later used as insulation in the company’s manufacturing plants, including the Firestone Polymers plant. For many years, asbestos was also used in brake pads and other automotive parts.
Workers who were employed at Firestone’s Sulphur, Louisiana plant may be at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases – including mesothelioma cancer and asbestos lung cancer – as a result of exposure to asbestos materials that were present in its buildings and the products that were manufactured there.
