History of International Paper’s Bastrop Mill

The International Paper mills in Bastrop, Louisiana were originally two mills built by the Bastrop Pulp & Paper Company in the 1920s: the Bastrop Mill in 1921 and the Louisiana Mill in 1924. These plants were also sometimes known as International Paper’s Louisiana mill.

In 1927, International Paper acquired ownership of both paper mills with the goal of making Bastrop, Louisiana the paper milling center of the southern U.S. During the decades in which the company’s Bastrop paper mill was in operation, International Paper employed hundreds of workers in Bastrop and the surrounding Morehouse Parish, making it one of the largest employers in the region.

While the International Paper Bastrop Mill was in operation, the company manufactured a variety of paper products at the site, including envelopes, kraft paper, office paper, and uncoated freesheet. Near the end of the plant’s operation, the mill switched to producing only pulp products, such as paper towels and tissues, and fluff pulp products like diapers and toilet paper.

International Paper closed the Bastrop paper mill in 1982. The Louisiana paper mill in Bastrop was closed in 2008.

Asbestos Exposure at the Bastrop Paper Mill

Workers exposed to asbestos before 1982 at International Paper’s Bastrop Mill or Louisiana Mill in Bastrop, Louisiana may be at risk of developing mesothelioma or asbestos lung cancer as a result of asbestos materials that were used at these paper mills.

Workers who repaired boilers, pipes, and other machinery at the plant were at risk of inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers every time they performed maintenance on this equipment.

Rollers and other machines that were used to compress pulp for making paper products used asbestos felt as a part of the manufacturing process. When the worn-out asbestos felt on these machine rollers was replaced, it could release large quantities of asbestos fibers into the air, putting all workers at risk of deadly exposure to asbestos.
