Asbestos at International Paper Plant in Pineville

The International Paper Co. Paper plant in Pineville, Louisiana was used to manufacture both kraft paper and containerboard paper during its decades in operation.

International Paper announced that it would close its Pineville paper mill in 2009. At the time of its closure, the plant manufactured containerboard for use in corrugated packaging for the agricultural, poultry, and produce industries.

Employees who worked at International Paper’s Pineville paper mill may have been exposed to asbestos materials at this site, putting them at risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases linked to exposure to asbestos.

Workers who fixed boilers, pipes, or other machine parts at the Pineville plant faced an increased risk of either inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers whenever they were called upon to repair this equipment.

In addition, rollers and other machine components that compressed the paper pulp that was used to manufacture products at the International Paper Pineville plant employed asbestos felt during the manufacturing process.

When this asbestos felt needed to be replaced, workers often released large quantities of airborne asbestos into the surrounding area, placing them at risk of exposure.
