Asbestos Exposure at International Paper’s Springhill Mill
International Paper opened its paper mill in Cullen, Louisiana in 1937. Although technically located in Cullen, this mill was commonly referred to as the Springhill paper mill. The mill remained in operation until 1979.
In 1981, International Paper began operations at a manufacturing plant for lumber and plywood that was also located in Springhill. Although this plant was later sold to Georgia Pacific, International Paper continued to operate a container manufacturing plant (also known as the “box plant”) at the site until the present day.
Workers at International Paper’s Springhill paper mill may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases linked to asbestos exposure.
Employees whose jobs required them to fix repaired boilers, pipes, and other machine components inside the plant faced an increased risk of inhaling asbestos particles every time they were asked to perform maintenance.
Rollers and other machines that were used to make paper products by compressing pulp contained asbestos felt. When damaged asbestos felt had to be replaced on these machine rollers, workers sometimes released large amounts of asbestos fibers into the air, placing them at serious risk of asbestos exposure.
