Asbestos Exposure at International Paper’s West Monroe Plant

The Brown Paper Mill in West Monroe, Louisiana was opened in 1924. In the 1950s, this mill was purchased by the International Paper Company when it acquired ownership of Brown Paper.

Over the decades, the International Paper mill in West Monroe has also been operated by Manville Forest Products, Olincraft, Olin Mathieson Chemicals, Riverwood International, and finally Graphic Packaging.

Workers who were employed at the International Paper mill in West Monroe, Louisiana may be at risk of developing mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, or other serious and potentially fatal illnesses as a result of asbestos exposure.

Employees at paper mills whose jobs require them to fix boilers, pipes, or other machines were in danger of being exposed to asbestos particles every time that they performed maintenance on these components.

Other workers may have also been exposed to asbestos in the International Paper mill when they changed the asbestos felt rollers that were used to compress pulp. When these asbestos rollers were changed, it could release asbestos fibers into the air, putting the health of nearby workers at serious long-term risk.
