Asbestos Exposure at Monsanto’s New Orleans Chemical Plant
The Monsanto chemical plant in Lulling, Louisiana (in St. Charles Parish near New Orleans) was first opened by the Lion Oil Company in 1954. Originally known as the Barton Plant, ownership of the plant passed to Monsanto in 1955 when it acquired Lion Oil. In 2018, Bayer AG acquired Monsanto and took control of the Lulling chemical plant, renaming it the Bayer Crop Science Luling Plant.
The Monsanto-Bayer chemical plant in Lulling has been used to produce a variety of pesticide and herbicide products, most notably glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup. Currently, Bayer’s St. Charles plant is the largest producer of glyphosate in the world.
Workers who were employed by Lion Oil, Monsanto, or Bayer at the Lulling plant or other chemical plants where asbestos was used may be at risk of mesothelioma cancer or asbestos lung cancer as a result of exposure to asbestos materials at this facility.
Lawsuits against Monsanto filed by workers who allege they developed mesothelioma cancer after exposure to asbestos at the company’s Lulling chemical plant say that Monsanto failed to properly warn workers about the dangers of asbestos cancer they may have faced from working at the chemical plant.
