Asbestos Exposure at Shell’s Norco Refinery

The Shell Oil refiner in Norco, Louisiana was originally opened by the New Orleans Refining Company (NORCO) in 1920. The Shell Petroleum Corporation (later known as the Shell Oil Company) acquired ownership of the NORCO refinery in 1929. In 1955, Shell opened a chemical plant on the same site.

In 1998, Shell’s refinery and chemical plant in Norco was renamed the Shell Norco Refining Company and became a division of Motiva Enterprises. At that time, Motiva was a joint venture between Shell and Saudi Aramco.

Over the decades, the Shell Norco chemical plant and refinery have produced a wide variety of petrochemical products. The Norco refinery has produced products such as anode-grade coke, aviation fuel, diesel fuel, and gasoline, while the chemical plant has been used to make aromatic feedstocks, butadiene, ethylene, and propylene.

Employees at the Shell Norco refinery and chemical plant may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases as a result of asbestos exposure at these facilities.

Lawsuits against Shell filed by employees at the Norco plant have alleged that pipefitters and other workers were exposed to large quantities of asbestos due to insulation and other asbestos-materials found at the site.
