Asbestos Exposure at Stauffer’s Baton Rouge Chemical Plant
Stauffer Chemical opened its sulfuric acid chemical plant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the 1940s.
At this chemical plant, virgin sulfur and spent sulfuric acid are combined with other materials to produce sulfuric acid. The plant’s operations are fueled by a combination of natural gas and other fuels that are hazardous waste derivatives.
Stauffer’s Baton Rouge chemical plant was originally constructed to produce sulfuric acid for mining applications and other industrial purposes. In the 1969, Stauffer expanded the chemical plant by adding additional units to the facility that were designed for the regeneration of sulfuric acid.
In 1987, Stauffer was sold to Rhone-Poulenc, who assumed operation of the company’s Baton Rouge chemical plant. In the decades since, this facility has also been operated under the names Eco Services Operations, Rhodia, and Solvay USA.
Before asbestos was banned in the U.S., dozens of asbestos-containing materials were routinely used at Stauffer’s Baton Rouge sulfuric acid plant.
Boilermakers, chemical workers, millwrights, pipefitters, and other workers who were employed at Stauffer’s Baton Rouge plant may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer or asbestos lung cancer as a result of asbestos exposure at this facility.
