Asbestos Exposure at Todd’s New Orleans Shipyard
The Todd Shipyard in New Orleans, Louisiana (also known as the Todd Dry Docks or the Todd-Johnson Dry Docks) was built by the William H. Todd Corporation in the 1920s. The shipyard was located near the Algiers Naval Station, which was the largest military installation in the New Orleans area.
The Todd New Orleans Shipyard merged with the Johnson Iron Works in 1936. During the Second World War, the Todd-Johnson Dry Docks, as it was now known, became a major site for the manufacturing of Navy ships, including submarines and other vessels.
After World War II, Todd continued to build and repair ships at the New Orleans shipyard for decades. As the demand for domestic shipbuilding began to decrease, activity at the company’s New Orleans shipyard declined, and the site was eventually closed in 1989, in part due to the high number of asbestos and mesothelioma lawsuits filed against the company.
Workers who were employed at the Todd Shipyard in New Orleans may be at risk of developing mesothelioma or asbestos lung cancer as a result of the high volume of asbestos materials that were used in the construction of ships built at this facility.
Studies have shown that workers at shipyards such as the Todd New Orleans dry docks are 4-7 times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma because of the high amounts of asbestos that were found at these sites.
Over the past several decades, Todd has faced hundreds of asbestos lawsuits filed by shipyard workers who were diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer, or other diseases linked to asbestos exposure. Many of these claims resulted in settlements for workers and families who were effected by asbestos diseases, as well as compensation from asbestos bankruptcy trust funds designed to compensate victims of asbestos exposure.
