Asbestos at Alcoa’s Rockdale Aluminum Smelter
Alcoa’s aluminum smelter in Rockdale, Texas opened in 1952. Eventually, the plant grew into Alcoa’s largest facility, processing tons of bauxite ore into aluminum each year. Power for the aluminum plant came from nearby coal deposits and a coal plant that was built near the factory and operated by Sandow.
In 2008, Alcoa ended aluminum smelting operations at the Rockdale plant because of a dispute about power supply to the facility. The company continued processing aluminum powder at the former Rockdale refinery until 2014.
