Asbestos at Amoco Texas City Refinery

The American Oil (Amoco) refinery in Texas City, Texas was originally built by the Pan American Refining Corporation in 1933. When Pan American merged with Standard Oil of Indiana in 1954, ownership passed to Amoco. The refinery was acquired by BP after it merged with Amoco in 1999. Marathon Petroleum acquired the BP Texas City refinery in 2013, renaming it the Galveston Bay Refinery.

Workers at the BP-Amoco Texas City refinery may be at risk of mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or asbestosis from exposure to asbestos from materials used in the construction of the plant, as well as protective equipment and other asbestos materials found at the facility.

In 2005, when the refinery was owned by BP, the Texas City facility was the site of a massive explosion caused by leaking gasoline vapor. The Texas City refinery explosion killed 15 workers and injured 180 more, making it one of the worst industrial disasters in U.S. history.

An EPA investigation following the explosion found that BP had mismanaged asbestos materials and other hazardous chemicals during renovations and demolitions at the Texas City refinery. BP was forced to pay a fine of $161 million in a settlement with the EPA.
