Asbestos at Bethlehem Beaumont Shipyard
The Bethlehem Beaumont Shipyard opened in Beaumont, Texas in 1948. From that year until the early 1980s, the Beaumont Shipyard was used to build offshore drilling rigs, including container barges, deck barges, drill barges, jackup rigs, self-propelled semisubmersible drill rigs, semi-submersible platforms, and tower barges.
From 1982 until 2017, the Beaumont Shipyard was operated by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company under the name Beaumont Island Park Fabrication Service. During that period, the shipyard built large-scale process modules, large steel plate subassemblies, and shop-built ships.
Before 1948, the Beaumont Shipyard was operated by the Beaumont Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company and Pennsylvania Car & Foundry, which operated the yard under the names Pennsylvania Shipyards and Petroleum Iron Works. During this time, the yard had been used to construct minesweepers, schooners, steam ships, stores ships, tugboats, and various types of cargo ships that saw action in World War I and World War II.
Because of the widespread use of asbestos materials in ship construction, most workers at the Beaumont Shipyard were exposed to asbestos, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other diseases caused by asbestos exposure.
