Asbestos at Dupont’s Beaumont Plant
E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company opened its plant in Beaumont, Texas in 1955. At the time that it opened, the company’s Beaumont Works Industrial Park was dedicated solely to the manufacturing of sulfur vulcanizable ethylene propylene rubber.
Over time, Dupont began manufacturing a variety of plastics and other materials at its Beaumont site, including acrylonitrile, a material used in a variety of acrylic plastics; aniline, a component in polyurethane; and a type of chlorosulfonated polyethylene known as Hypalon, which is found in plastics that are used for rubber rafts, pond liners, and wire insulation.
Lucite International took control of DuPont’s acrylonitrile facility in Beaumont in 2005. The plant was eventually closed in 2010.
