Asbestos at Dupont’s Laporte Chemical Plant
Dupont opened its chemical plant in La Porte, Texas following World War II. Over the six decades that the plant was in operation, the facility was used to manufacture a number of chemical products, including polyvinyls, textiles, sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, pesticides, and herbicides.
Workers at the Dupont plant in Laporte may be at risk of developing mesothelioma, lung cancer, or other diseases as a result of exposure to asbestos materials used at this site or in the construction of the plant. Lawsuits filed against the company have shown that a number of Dupont workers have developed mesothelioma or other asbestos illnesses as a result of exposure caused by their jobs.
In 2014, four workers at Dupont’s La Porte plant were killed when methyl mercaptan (MeSH), a toxic chemical used to make insecticide and fungicide, was accidentally released. Dupont was ordered to pay $16 million in criminal penalties and community service payments for the chemical release. Dupont permanently closed the insecticide production unit where the four workers died in 2016.
