Asbestos at Dupont Sabine River Works
Dupont opened its plan in Orange, Texas – known as the Dupont Sabine River Works – in 1947. After Dow Chemical acquired Dupont in 2019, operation of the Sabine River Works passed to Dow.
Originally, Dupont’s petrochemical plant in Orange produced the salts used to manufacture Nylon, a synthetic fabric that was developed by Dupont.
Eventually, the Sabine River Works’ manufacturing line grew to include other Dupont products, including Surlyn, an ionomer resin used as a coating and packaging material; Nucrel, an ethylene acid copolymer resin used as a foil adhesive; Fusabond, a type of polyethylene used as a water-vapor barrier and sealant for coating or lamination; and Vamac, a ethylene acrylic elastomer used in automotive turbo charger hoses, oil cooler hoses, seals, and gaskets.
Workers at Dupont’s Sabine River Works plant in Orange, Texas may be at risk of developing cancer as a result of asbestos materials that were found at this site. Some of the buildings at Dupont’s Orange Texas plant have been vacant for decades because of asbestos contamination from materials that were used in the construction of these structures.
