Asbestos Exposure at Exxon’s Baytown Refinery
ExxonMobil’s Baytown Refinery and chemical plant was first opened by the Humble Oil Company in 1919. The facility – officially known as the ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins Plant – is the third largest refinery in the U.S. and the tenth largest in the world, capable of refining 588,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
The Exxon Baytown refinery also produces a number of petrochemical products, including butene-1, a chemical used to make polyethylene; polypropylene; butyl rubber; adhesives; polyalphaolefins, a chemical used in Mobil 1 oil; Vistamaxx performance polymers; Exact plastomers; and Elevexx intermediate fluids and waxes.
Lawsuits filed against ExxonMobil have alleged that workers at the Baytown refinery and chemical plant were exposed to asbestos, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, and other diseases linked to asbestos. These lawsuits have alleged that Exxon knew about the hazards of asbestos, but failed to properly warn or protect workers against the dangers of this carcinogenic substance.
In 2019, an explosion at the ExxonMobil chemical plant in Baytown injured dozens of workers. Another explosion at the refinery in 2021 injured several workers at the facility, as well as hundreds of local residents. Both of these industrial accidents resulted in lawsuits against ExxonMobil by the injured workers and residents.
