Asbestos at Gulf-Chevron Baytown Plant
The Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown is the largest petrochemical manufacturing facility owned by the Chevron Phillips Chemical Company. The plant is located east of Houston inside the Houston Ship Channel.
Gulf Oil originally built the Cedar Bayou chemicals plant in 1962. In 1984, the ownership of the plant passed to Standard Oil Co. of California (Socal) after it purchased Gulf Oil for more than $13 billion. Socal transferred control of all of its Texas Gulf Coast plants to the Chevron Corporation, which at the time was owned by Socal. In 2000, after Chevron formed a partnership with Phillips 66 (formerly Phillips Petroleum) ownership of the Cedar Bayou plant passed to Chevron Phillips.
Because the Gulf-Chevron chemical plant in Baytown was built before the use of asbestos materials was restricted in the U.S., workers at this facility may have been exposed to airborne asbestos, placing them at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other asbestos-related diseases.
Chemical workers who were employed at the Cedar Bayou plant and who have been diagnosed with diseases caused by asbestos exposure may be eligible to file a lawsuit and receive compensation from one of the asbestos trusts designed to compensate victims of asbestos exposure.
