Asbestos at Gulf Oil’s Port Arthur Refinery

The Gulf Oil petroleum refinery along the Alligator Bayou in Port Arthur, Texas was built in 1902 during the Spindletop salt dome oil boom.

In 1984, after Gulf Oil was acquired by the Chevron Corporation, ownership of the Port Arthur refinery passed to Chevron. Clark Refining (later known as Premcor) took control of the plant in 1995.

For decades, the Gulf-Chevron plant in Port Arthur produced and refined a number of petrochemical products, including diesel fuel, fuel oils, gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, lubricating oils, motor oil, naphtha, and other petrochemical products.

After World War II, production at Gulf Oil’s Port Arthur plant expanded significantly: by 1955, Gulf Oil was the country’s largest producer of ethylene, and by 1960, the Port Arthur plant was producing more than 600 different petrochemical products.

Workers who were employed at the Port Arthur petrochemical plant say that asbestos materials used in the construction of the facility caused widespread asbestos exposure, especially when buildings at the facility were refurbished. Plant workers were also regularly exposed to solvents and other dangerous chemicals.

Employees at the plant say that they were never warned about the risk of mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases associated with asbestos exposure; nor were they provided with protective equipment that could have helped to shield their health against the hazardous effects of asbestos.
