Asbestos at Gulfport’s Port Arthur Shipyard
Founded in 1930 as the Gulfport Boiler & Welding Works, the Gulfport Shipbuilding Corporation was a shipyard that operated in Port Arthur, Texas until it was closed in 1985.
During the mid-1930s, the facility began constructing a limited number ships to supplement its boiler manufacturing business. The high quality of the ships produced at this yard led to contracts from the U.S. government for the construction of ocean tugs.
During World War II, Gulfport Shipbuilding’s Port Arthur shipyard built a number of Type B tank barges and Type V tugboats, including the USS Pinola, USS Winnetka, USS Challenge, USS Wandank, HMS Tancred, USS Sciota, USS Navigator, and USS Umpqua.
Over the following decades, tug building continued to be the principal line of business at Gulfport Shipbuilding. In 1970, the shipyard was sold to Levingston Shipbuilding, who began also producing barges and small rigs. The Port Arthur shipyard was eventually closed in 1985.
Many workers who were employed at Gulfport Shipbuilding between the 1930s and 1980s were heavily exposed to asbestos materials. Airborne asbestos was widespread during the construction of military ships, and employees were neither warned nor provided with protective equipment that could have helped to safeguard them from the effects of asbestos exposure.
As a result of the widespread asbestos contamination at Gulfport Shipbuilding’s Port Arthur shipyard, many workers who were employed at this facility were at risk later in their lives of being diagnosed with serious asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other diseases.
