Asbestos at Levingston’s Orange Shipyard
The Levingston Shipbuilding Company was a shipbuilding facility founded along the Sabine River in Orange, Texas.
The first ship built at this facility was completed in 1925. During World War II, the Levingston shipyard in Orange constructed ships that were used at the United States Naval Station Orange. The shipyard also built many Type B tank barges and Type V tugboats.
Other notable ships that were built include four Bayandor-class corvettes – the Bayandor, Naghdi, Milanian, and Kahnamoie – during the 1960s, and the Kennedy-class Staten Island ferries, which transported passengers from Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan and St. George Terminal in Staten Island, New York. Many ship conversions or repairs were also performed at Levingston Shipbuilding during the peak of its operations.
Lawsuits filed against the Levingston shipyard have alleged that the widespread use of asbestos materials at this facility has placed naval veterans and former shipyard workers at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other asbestos-related diseases.
