Asbestos at Monsanto’s Texas City Plant
The Monsanto Chemical Company’s Texas City plant was built during World War II in order to make styrene, one of the ingredients in synthetic rubber.
This plant was the site of a 1947 disaster that resulted from an ammonium nitrate explosion onboard the SS Grandcamp, a former U.S. Navy ship that was docked in the Texas City harbor. The explosion leveled nearly 1,000 buildings in Texas City, including the Monsanto plant, killing 145 out of its 160 workers.
Following the explosion, Monsanto rebuilt its chemical plant in Texas City. However, when the plant was rebuilt, Monsanto used many asbestos materials in its construction, including ceiling tiles, ductwork, flooring, paint, and storage tanks at the facility.
As a result of the materials used in the re-construction of Monsanto’s Texas City chemical plant, workers who were employed at this facility may have been exposed to asbestos. This exposure may have been worsened because workers were not properly warned about the risks of asbestos exposure, nor provided with protective equipment that could have protected them from inhaling or ingesting airborne asbestos fibers.
