Asbestos at Texaco’s Port Arthur Refinery

Texaco’s Port Arthur Works refinery was opened by the then-Texas Company in 1903, following the discovery of oil in Beaumont. After additional oil reserves were discovered in Texas and Louisiana, Texaco began expanding its Port Arthur refinery.

During its first year of operation, the Port Arthur Works produced only fuel from crude oil and asphalt. As the refinery expanded over the subsequent decades, Texaco’s Port Arthur facility began to produce many other petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation fuels, and high quality base oils.

In 1989, Saudi Refining, Inc. purchased a 50-percent interest in Texaco’s Port Arthur refinery in a joint venture with the latter company known as Star Enterprises. After Texaco was bought by Chevron in 2001, Texaco’s interest in the Port Arthur Works was bought by Shell in a joint venture known as Motiva Enterprises. The Texaco plant was renamed the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery following this purchase.

Because of asbestos materials that were used in the construction of Texaco’s Port Arthur refinery, boiler workers, construction workers, factory workers, metal workers, pipefitters, and other industrial workers at this site may have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other serious diseases.
