Asbestos at Texaco’s Port Neches Refinery

Although Texaco began operating an asphalt refinery in Port Neches in 1908, the company’s petroleum refinery in Port Neches was built in the mid-1940s by Jefferson Chemical, a joint venture between Texaco and American Cyanamid. Texaco became the sole owner of the Port Neches refinery in the 1970s, before the plant was finally sold to Huntsman in the 1990s.

Over the years, many different kinds of petrochemical products were produced at the Texaco / Huntsman Port Neches Operations, including amines, ethanolamines, ethylene, ethylene glycols, ethylene oxide (EO), methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), propylene, propylene glycol, propylene oxide, and surfactants.

Asbestos materials that were used in the construction of Texaco’s Port Neches refinery – as well as asbestos-containing materials that were used by workers – has put Texaco employees who worked at this facility at risk of developing diseases linked to asbestos exposure, including mesothelioma cancer and asbestos lung cancer.

Refinery workers, construction workers, boiler workers, factory workers, pipefitters, metal workers, and other workers who were employed at Texaco’s Port Neches refinery may be in danger of being diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease even decades after they stopped working at this plant.
