Asbestos at Todd Shipyard in Galveston
Todd Shipbuilding began operations in Galveston in 1934, when the company acquired a small shipyard known as Galveston Dry Dock & Construction. Originally, this facility was operated as a tanker repair yard for both civilian and naval ships.
In 1943, at the request of the U.S. Maritime Commission, Todd took control of operations at another Galveston shipyard, Gray’s Iron Works. The combined facilities, renamed the Todd Galveston Drydocks, were also known as the Pelican Island Works due to their location in Galveston harbor.
Nearly 100 ships were built or repaired at Todd’s Galveston Drydocks before the facility was permanently closed by Todd in 1990.
Because of the high levels of asbestos materials used in ships that were constructed at the Todd Galveston Drydocks, ship and construction workers who were employed at this facility may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer or asbestos lung cancer. Naval veterans who served onboard ships that were repaired or stationed in Galveston may also be at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases from exposure onboard these ships.
Over the decades, Todd Shipyards has been the subject of hundreds of asbestos lawsuits filed by former workers and military veterans who were exposed at the company’s facilities. Veterans who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer, or other asbestos diseases may also be eligible to file a claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
