Asbestos at Union Carbide’s Seadrift Plant
The Union Carbide Company’s Seadrift Operations was opened in 1954. The facility later became owned by Dow Chemical Company when it purchased Union Carbide in 2001.
Union Carbide’s Seadrift manufacturing plant produces a number of petroleum derivative products, including plastics that are used in food and beverage containers, automotive parts, wires, cables, and other applications; glycols used in antifreeze, fabrics, or bottles; and oxide derivatives that can be found in medicine, shampoo, soap, detergent, window cleaner, brake fluid and paint.
During its first few decades in operation, asbestos materials were commonly found at the Dow / Union Carbide Seadrift Operations, including pipelines, sinks, vats, and vessels. Workers who were employed at this plant may have been exposed to airborne asbestos from the materials that were used in the construction of this facility, putting them at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, asbestos lung cancer, or other asbestos-related diseases.
Over the decades, Union Carbide has been the subject of numerous asbestos lawsuits filed by workers who were exposed at the company’s manufacturing plants, as well as asbestos that was mined by the company during the 20th century.
